The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Women, University of Baghdad, held a scientific workshop entitled (How to Maintain Ideal Weight and Optimal Diet).
The workshop was presented by Prof. Suhad Haseeb Abdul-Hamid, Assistant Dean for Scientific and Student Affairs, Prof. Suaad Abdul-Hussein Wahib, and Asst. Lect. Safia Ihsan Kamil.
The workshop aimed to define the concept of ideal weight, clarify the relationship between a balanced diet and disease prevention, and provide participants with recommendations that help them maintain their fitness and health. It also focused on raising awareness about maintaining an ideal weight through a balanced diet combined with regular physical activity, as well as promoting physical and mental well-being by following healthy dietary systems and conducting regular medical checkups to prevent diseases related to obesity and malnutrition.
The presenters discussed the main causes of weight gain, such as excessive intake of sugars and unhealthy fats, overconsumption of processed foods and fast food, insufficient intake of vegetables and fruits, inadequate water consumption, excessive caffeine and soft drink intake, and following unbalanced or random diets.
They also pointed out that some health problems may contribute to weight gain, including thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalances, gut health issues, and high cortisol levels.
In conclusion, the workshop recommended adopting a sustainable, healthy lifestyle, organizing balanced, small meals throughout the day, choosing healthy protein sources, reducing sugar intake, exercising regularly, improving sleep and reducing stress, increasing water intake, performing regular health checkups, and adopting educational booklets to promote health and fitness awareness.
This workshop contributes to achieving two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 4 (Quality Education), and Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
